Catastrophe RD

Final production for Karl Chu’s Spring 09 semester at Pratt Institute. The project consists of an aggregation of proto-architectural units that configure potential housing and living spaces. The project was built through L-System and aggregation rulesets. A series of possible structural and inhabiation units were exhausted through these rulesets to create a conglomerate morphology with architectual and spatial qualities.

El proyecto consiste de una agregación de unidades proto-arquitectónicas que se configuraron potencialmente como un multifamiliar. Se construyó a través de un sistema-L y reglas de agregación. Una serie de unidades habitacionales y estructurales se escogieron para crear un una mofrología conglomerada con cualidades arquitectónicas y espaciales.

09 SP : Karl Chu : Midterm Diagrams

A modular system of self similar units constructed with L-Systems for Karl Chu’s 09 Fall Design Studio at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY, USA.

The project is an exercise in construction of self-similar components where their differences emerge from a gradual change to the rule sets that generate them. The geometry of each component is constructed based on its reflection on the x, y, and z axes. Eight different L-System rules were used to generate 8 different components, which changed gradually and constantly. Once these modules were constructed, a logic of connection was applied to begin the creation of topologically continuous surfaces. A line of eight components with their respective connections was obtained and replicated along a grid to form what we call a wall. The system could begin to grow in all directions based on the connection logic to create something more like a sponge, rather than a wall. I will post more images and text later on in the semester.

Un sistema de módulos construidos a base de una lógica de sistemas L para el taller de diseño de Karl Chu, otoño 09, en el Instituto Pratt, Brooklyn, NY, EUA.

El proyecto es un ejercicio de uso y construcción de componentes auto-similares donde sus diferencias emergen de un cambio gradual que sucede al cambiar las reglas que lo conforman. La geometría de cada componente se construye a base de el reflejo de la misma. Usé ocho diferentes reglas de sistemas-L para generar ocho diferentes componentes, cambiándolas gradual y constantemente. Una vez obtenidos estos módulos, empleé una lógica de conexión que une los elementos para iniciar la creación de topologías contínuas. Esta línea de ocho componentes con sus respectivas conexiones (establecidas entre sí), fue utilizada para construir lo que llamamos un muro. El sistema podría comenzar a construirse en todas direcciones para formar algo como una esponja, en vez de una superficie. Subiré mas imágenes e información conforme las produzca.

A parametric arch installation for artist Sheryl Oring’s show: I wish to say at the McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum, Chicago. The arch was populated with cuboctahedrons made of lasercut vynil sheets.

A graduate dormitory proposal

Progam

A graduate dormitory housing proposal for Pratt Institute. The programmatic organization lays its logic in a fractal social network we call pooling. Six Units are arranged around a large communal space, where a kitchen and lounge areas are located. The units contain no kitchens and small living rooms so the social activity is pushed to the directly adjacent communal space. These six unit blocks are then arranged adjacent to each other and connected through an exterior stair network. This way users can have direct access to other community spaces without the use of the stair tower. Pooling becomes the social theme, users pool from bedrooms to living rooms to communal spaces to exterior public space.

Skin

The skin, a formal-performative study acts as the public-environmental membrane of the building. Vertical (horizontal on the tower) louvers shield users to southwest sunlight but adjust throughout to differentiate light penetration and connectivity to the exterior. A space between floor slab and skin becomes inhabitable at some points with the use of box windows which penetrate through the skin and become additional interior space.

A longspan proposal for McCarren pool in Brooklyn, New York. The program includes a lap pool, diving pool, recreation areas and changing areas. The structure was developed using Eladio Dieste’s double curved vaults as precedent. The project (Library) deals with parasitic relationships discovered in the past exploration of programmatic units. The layering of different programs on a significantly narrow site meant thin slices of program were to form the building’s organization. Closest to the neighboring buildings is the first slice of program: book storage, from which the reading areas fed off of. Two service cores, one public and vertical and the other private and diagonal serve and buffer the two main programs (reading and book storage.) The programmatic units (from midterm) were used as part of the reading areas and as a generator for the geometry and thickening of the façade. Finally the form of the building adapts parasitically to the site, a public ramp from the sidewalk connects to the highest floor, which is connected to the roofs of neighboring buildings via a cantilever to begin a use of the roofs as an urban recreational area.

El proyecto (una biblioteca) se genera a base de una investigación y aplicación de relaciones parasíticas, originaria de la exploración de unidades programáticas, llevada a cabo en la primera parte del semestre. La organización del edificio emergió del acomodo del programa por capas delgadas, dictadas por la angostura del sitio. Mas cercano a los edificios adyacentes se encentra la primera capa del programa: el almacenaje de los libros, de el cual las áreas de lectura se alimentan. Existen dos cortezas de servicio, una pública vertical y otra privada diagonal, las cuales que actúan como servicios a los programas antes mencionados y como intermediarios entre ellos. Las unidades programáticas (exploradas hasta los parciales semestrales) fueron usadas como áreas de lectura y generadores de la geometría y el grosor de la fachada. Finalmente la forma del edificio se adapta parasíticamente al sitio; una rampa de uso público conecta la azera con el ultimo piso del edificio, que a su vez se conecta con los techos de los edificios adyacentes para iniciar su uso como áreas de recreación pública.

Here are the boards I presented for midterm review last Thursday. The studio has concentrated in developing three units with specific programs that interact with each other to begin to create a programmatic core for a library. Unit 1 is a sitting/studying unit, Unit 2 is a book storage unit and Unit 3 is a connector between the two previous, an excluded study space. There is a board with drawings of the resulting cabinet, or aggregation of units, and a board with site analysis. The former was a result of an aggregation of three separate book storage spaces (magazines, reference and fiction books) using unit 2 and then a specific arrangement for these types of programs, including more public and private spaces and enclosed study spaces formed by unit 3. Some of the major critiques were the limited use of the oblique geometry as in Virilio and Parent’s proposition, of both enclosure and vertical circulation. Also the weakness of Unit 2’s bookshelves and the limited function of Unit 2 and 3. As far as the site analysis, the critics considered the idea of commensalism, found in the study of rats around the site very interesting but weakly developed and also called for more specificity in the analysis. Also, considering my last post about spatio temporal analysis, my application of this in the site analysis ended up in a repetition of a map, on the z axis (time) to represent the change in rat locality as a day passes and the rats natural cycle in the urban environment.

Aquí les presento mis dibujos para mi presentación parcial de diseño que tuve el jueves pasado. La clase se ha concentrado en desarrollar tres unidades con programas específicos que pueden comenzar a crear una base o centro programático para una biblioteca. La primera unidad contiene un programa de lectura y estudio, la segunda almacena los libros y la tercera conecta las dos primeras y crea un espacio de exclusividad para estudio personal. También verán unos dibujos de el gabinete, o la agregación de los módulos y de un análisis del sitio. La anterior es un resultado de una agregación específica de las unidades como resultado de una consideración de tres programas de almacenamiento de libros: revistas, libros de referencia y libros de ficción usado la unidad 2 como el centro de estos programas. Después se consiguió una agregación específica con los otros módulos para crear espacios mas privados y más públicos así como los exclusivamente privados creados por la unidad 3. Algunas de las críticas mas importantes fueron el uso limitado de la geometría oblicua en la forma propuesta por Virilio y Parent, donde una superficie forma el espacio y la circulación vertical. También se criticaron los libreros de la Unidad 2 así como su funcionalidad limitada. En cuanto al análisis del sitio, los críticos consideraron la teoría del comensalismo, encontrada en el análisis de ratas, una idea muy interesante pero poco desarrollada y consideraron que se necesitaba mas especificidad en el análisis. En cuanto a la representación espacio temporal, de la que hablaba en mi última entrada, encontré que proyectar una repetición de mapas en el eje z (representando el tiempo), para representar el cambio de cantidad de ratas al pasar del día era una manera clara de entender cuales son los ciclos naturales del animan el el ambiente urbano.
